I have a really long rant about the new 'Elite' version of the Xbox 360 that launched last night, but it's boring and I don't really feel like typing the whole thing out. The gist of the arguments are:
- The new Xbox is $480 (!). When everyone is bashing Sony for the high price of the PS3 ($500-$600) I'm not so sure it's a good idea to release a more expensive SKU into the marketplace. Especially when the competitor's product includes a next-gen optical drive.
- It's got a 120GB hard drive (original has a 20GB). They are selling this as an add on for current 360 owners for $180. This is insanity. The only reason one would need the bigger HD is if they are downloading a fuck ton of stuff from MSFT's online marketplace. And if you're downloading stuff from MSFT's online marketplace you're paying for that content already. If anything, they should be subsidizing the cost of this thing in order to encourage more (paid) downloads from the Live marketplace. Plus, and I know this is apples and oranges (kinda), one can purchase a new 120GB laptop drive from The Egg for about $80. That's a retail price. Wholesale/bulk/direct from manufacturer cost has to be <$25/unit. $180 for the drive is lunacy.

Marge: You said this monkey would be sweeping the floors and cleaning the gutters. And now, he just lies there, struggling to breathe!
Homer: What do you want? His cholesterol's through the roof.
Marge: I want you to take that monkey back, so he can be rehabilitated and get a second chance.
Homer: No, no, he's fine! Go on, Mojo! Show Marge your happy dance!
