The Internets Expect Price Cuts - Hard Drive of 1996 Edition

I have a really long rant about the new 'Elite' version of the Xbox 360 that launched last night, but it's boring and I don't really feel like typing the whole thing out.  The gist of the arguments are:

  • The new Xbox is $480 (!).  When everyone is bashing Sony for the high price of the PS3 ($500-$600) I'm not so sure it's a good idea to release a more expensive SKU into the marketplace.  Especially when the competitor's product includes a next-gen optical drive.
  • It's got a 120GB hard drive (original has a 20GB).  They are selling this as an add on for current 360 owners for $180.  This is insanity.  The only reason one would need the bigger HD is if they are downloading a fuck ton of stuff from MSFT's online marketplace.  And if you're downloading stuff from MSFT's online marketplace you're paying for that content already.  If anything, they should be subsidizing the cost of this thing in order to encourage more (paid) downloads from the Live marketplace.  Plus, and I know this is apples and oranges (kinda), one can purchase a new 120GB laptop drive from The Egg for about $80.  That's a retail price.  Wholesale/bulk/direct from manufacturer cost has to be <$25/unit.  $180 for the drive is lunacy.

  • Can anyone tell I found a new blog that frequently posts fun Flash games?  Two more for today
    • Bloons - Puzzle game featuring an antigravity monkey
    • Chicken & Egg - Something to do with Easter.  I don't know, just give it a whirl

Marge: You said this monkey would be sweeping the floors and cleaning the gutters. And now, he just lies there, struggling to breathe!
Homer: What do you want? His cholesterol's through the roof.
Marge: I want you to take that monkey back, so he can be rehabilitated and get a second chance.
Homer: No, no, he's fine! Go on, Mojo! Show Marge your happy dance!

1.  The Foxmarks bookmark manager is an absolute must have.  It's pure genius since backing up FF bookmarks is a pain in the arse.

2.  Couldn't agree more about the ridiculous price of the $120 drive.  As someone who just downloaded two HD Movies from MSFT and maxed out their HD space this would come in handy.  Why the fuck can't I just plug in my own external drive into the damn Xbox?  They should be selling those new drives for $50 in hopes that idiots like me will fill them with shit they purchased online.  Buncha asshats...

Something like this adaptor (link below) could help you out, but it's needlessly complicated.

Marketing Genius Pedro talking about Marketing Juggernaut Microsoft about introducing new SKUs?  They are going to sell a shitload of those new XBoxes at the aforementioned silly margins and make a lot of money.  There will even be people who already own a 360 that will run (not walk) out and stand in line for a black version /of the thing they already have/.  Yeah, Microsoft doesn't know shit about marketing.  Maybe they should hire Starcom?

I prefer the PS3 anyway..."She's my sex box, and her name is Sony!"

Also, the HCWDBs site was featured in and around 200 West because of the prominent placement of "the twins", two balding 4'11" douchebags that hang out at Rockit Ranch outlets, EBC, and Tavern (in the summer).

Ok, I might just be bitter about the Elite SKU, but the HD price is still out of control.
