The Internets Demand Satisfaction - HD DVR DOA Edition

Regarding the other day's post:  I already said I was a big puss.

I finally got my DirecTV installed over the weekend.  Funny to think that I was actually getting used to watching programs over the air.  There's one problem though:  The DirecTV HDDVR is a piece of shit.  Every time we FFWD through a program there is a 50/50 chance that the audio and video will become wildly out of sync.  We're talking 1-2 seconds out of sync.  It basically makes TV unwatchable.  It is absolutely inexcusable that DTV shipped such a buggy device.

With computers and other early adopter type electronics I can expect to encounter bugs, but regular consumer electronics gear such as cable/satellite interface boxes should JUST WORK.  There is no reason to ship unfinished product to market.  Sure there are firmware update patches, but they should used to add features, not to fix crippling bugs that never should have shipped in the first place.

DTV is burning up any goodwill I had toward them at an alarming rate.

Wiggum: Uh, cancel that APB. But, uh, bring back some of them, uh, gyros.
Friday: Uh, Chief? You're talking into your wallet.

We had the same problem with the audio being out of sync, but firmware releases have subsequently fixed the issue.  What firmware are you running?

I have no idea what firmware I'm running.  That's half the point though, isn't it?  That is information I shouldn't have to know.  (But if it'll fix the thing I'll try to upgrade tonight).

I have noticed a general decline in DirecTV's service quality, attitude and helpfulness over the past 6 months.  It is getting worrysome.  I am holding out hope that their migration to a proprietary DVR and HD format has created a temporary burp within DTV and in the next couple months it will return to being the best TV provider.

http://www.dbstalk.com/ is  your friend

Essentially DTV released a beta product and it sucked donkey nuts at first.  However, if you were a member of the DBSTalk forum you could download beta firmwares every week and then post what you liked/hated about them online.

The forum peeps did a pretty good job of beating the crap out of these boxes found most of the major bugs.  These last few firmware releases have been pretty solid though and I haven't had any problems in well over a month.

Also did you get the HR20-700 or the HR20-100?  The HR20-100 is a new model, but doesn't support the latest and greatest firmware.
