    Obligatory Vista Thread

Okay so I got my free copy of Vista yesterday and last night while I was watching the little guy I decided to give it a whirl.  Here are some early opinions:

    1.  Install - Much improved over XP as all the annoying input stuff is at the beginning so once that's done you can just walk away.  Also install time took roughly 10 minutes compared to 15 minutes with XP.

    2.  Widgets - Poorly executed Mac rip-off.  The look like shit and don't offer anything.  That'll likely change over time as people release some cool widgets.

    3.  Aero Glass - very cool, Quick shut down/start up feature is also pretty cool.

    4.  It's a memory hog, but by comparison OSX is a much bigger hog.  Regardless you can never be too rich, too then or have too much memory.

    5.  DX10 - If you're a gamer you already know about this.  Right now DX10 is probably the only good reason to upgrade.

All in all the OS runs faster than XP did for me.  Pages load quicker and things just seem "snappier" in general.  I wouldn't say run out an upgrade unless you're a big time gamer looking to take advantage of what DX10 has to offer.  IE7 is a joke as is the annoying pop up "warning" every time you try and install a program.

FWIW, my system score is a 5.8

Are you running full aero glass with all of the eye candy?  Don't you have like a $600 videocard?

Yes, I'm running full Aero Glass with all the eye candy, but no I don't have a $600 vid card.  Saphire X1900XT Vid card was $265 @ NE.

Don't know if this has been a problem for anyone but Lifehacker has tips on how to disable some Vista nag screens. Didn't get home until 10p last night so I decided to forgo installing yet. Probably on Sunday.

That's the score I got before I put in the two additional 1GB memory sticks.  I drops your score to the rating of the lowest scoring component.

     FWIW:

    Dual Core Xeon 5130 @ 2.0Ghz x 2

    4GB RAM

    15K SCSI

    512MB Radeon X1900XT

Bah.  VLC won't display video.  Thoughts?

Works fine here....did you install the latest version?

BTW, for those that don't have VLC installed on their computer get it now.  It plays anything.

Yep.  Latest version.  I haven't updated my vid card drivers with the latest version though.  That might be the problem.  I don't need to install divx codec right?  VLC should handle that shit natively.

Also got my first BSOD when trying to install A120%.  I think creating the virtual drive caused Vista to shit itself.

    Good times.  Good times.

Shiggy's call might have been right.  Vista = suxors.

Vid card drivers might be the issue behind VLC not working and the BSOD.  The first thing I did was install the latest Radeon drivers for Vista.

Yeah, Vista looks pretty, but other than that I'm thinking XP just ran better.  I've got four cores in my box and they'll randomly be @ 30% load for hours at a time for no apparent reason.  For reference purposes they rarely get above 50% when I'm encoding video.

I'm looking into OSx86 right now.

    Re: Obligatory Vista Thread

Assuming I get home from work on time, Vista is getting uninstalled tonight.  It's just not jiving with what I need my system to to.  Optimally I'd have an extra box with Vista installed to tinker on, but I don't.  Nor do I have the time to try and figure out why microsoft took away my title bar menus.

Even though Vista sucks I highly recommend picking up a copy of Office 2007.  Office 2007 almost makes up for how bad Vista is.  Office '07 will be "available" to dm.net members as of tomorrow.  Check it out!

XP reinstalled after I got not a blue screen, but a blackscreen that said it needed the install disk to fix.
